Is Your Class AMAZED or AMUSED or CONFUSED?
Cla...zzzzzzzzzzz?
28When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law. ~ Matthew 7:28-29
Many of us have been amazed by someone’s teaching.
Amazed that the person would dare stand before a class.
Amazed that one human being could share so little information during such a long period of time.
Amazed that the teacher doesn’t notice that 72.3% of the class is asleep.
Amazing.
Church is notoriously known for being boring. What’s worse is we often say, “Well, the gospel isn’t for entertainment.” Maybe not, but it has to be interesting. And that responsibility lies with the teacher. It is not the students’ job to “get something out of it.” It’s the teacher’s obligation to present in a way that people want to learn and want to apply.
Amazing Rule #1
Create Classes that People Tell Others About.
Jesus didn’t have promo ads, email, an interactive website, television or fancy flyers. He had word of mouth. People telling other people, “Hey, Jesus is teaching over on the mountain today!”
There were hundreds of teachers in Jerusalem alone. Why did they choose Jesus? That answer will also help us build our classes.
First, Jesus’ teaching was relevant to the lives of His listeners.
Second, Jesus’ teaching was not status quo. He taught what the people needed even if it was contrary to popular teaching. However, He wasn’t belligerent. All except the Pharisees found His words freeing.
Third, Jesus didn’t care if the crowd didn’t get it. He left the door open for personal interpretation.
Fourth, Jesus had the Father’s power. One of the reasons so many people came is because of the miracles. When God is working through our teaching, others will come as well.
Fifth, Jesus' teaching was brief. Usually he gave a short thought for people to think about. Only in the “Sermon on the Mount” does he cover multiple ideas.
Sixth, Jesus used the moment. A well. A woman caught in adultery. A grain field. Dirt.
All of those areas made it easy for people to tell other’s about Jesus and His teaching.
If we’re convinced that Bible classes are still the best way to instruct and mature believers - and to reach unbelievers - then we have to do much more than just get class material together. To become an amazing teacher it takes much more than that. (The above section was excerpted from "Teaching That Changes Lives.")
