Youth Ministry Tip of the Week
by Paul and Al

Youth Ministry - Affirming Teens - Part 3

7. Flashlight Nite. Have teens form a circle or square. Turn out all the lights, and after all the ooohs die out shine the flashlight on a teen (not in their eyes). Keep the teen illuminated for 30 seconds while the group affirms him or her.  Repeat this for each teen until the entire group has been encouraged. Most teens love the spotlight so this ought to be a great night for them.

8. Picture Picture. Get a large corkboard and hang it in your office. Make a sign that says “World’s #1 Youth Group” and place it above the board. Cover the board with pictures and encouraging notes the group has given you. When teens come hang out at your office, they’ll notice that you really do care after all.

9. Play Favorites. Discover each teen’s favorite dessert or junk food. Once a week go by the store with the names of a couple of teens and pick up their favorite morsels. Then go by their homes and make this special delivery.

10. C2. Cards and calls may be old standbys, but they’re hard to beat. Teens love to get mail - even from their youth leader. Make the card personal and encouraging. Point out a special gift God has given the teen and include the reason you thank God for him or her. If you are aware of a particular struggle mention in the letter that you are praying about it.

Use the telephone for general check-ups. In a letter teens don’t have to respond verbally, on the phone they do. Don’t be surprised if all you get is uh-huhs, but that doesn’t mean they are not glad you called. It’s the way they talk on the phone!
